Goal: $25,000.00
Specific Need
This year, we continue to raise funds for the construction of a multi-use facility to be located here in Hiawatha! As we reach the final stretch and prepare to break ground in the fall, our goal is $25,000 for 2024 Match Days. We are so grateful to the Hiawatha Community for continuing to support this project and we can't wait for you to visit us in our new home!
NEKAAA is constructing a 17,650 square foot facility in Hiawatha, Kansas located within the Walmart Retail Plaza between Hopi Drive and Natchez Street. This state of the art facility will include aging and disability services, a regional transit hub and dispatch center, a community café and Meals on Wheel of Northeast Kansas program, technology hub, and recreational activities space.
Through this innovative project, we will be able to increase access to services for all aging adults in Brown County and throughout our seven county service area. This facility features a combination community café and senior meal site, where individuals of all ages can enjoy a healthy meal and aging residents can participate in Older Americans Act nutrition programs. Our technology lab will focus on supporting the digital literacy of rural residents and help them better use technology to improve their quality of life. We will also offer meaningful socialization activities and wellness programs as an opportunity to improve the health and well-being of community members. NEKAAA General Public Transportation, which is available for all ages, will be able to expand the transit fleet and increase access to employment, school, medical appointments, and local retail establishments.

Profile
Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging (NEKAAA) is a 501 (c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization established in 1973 through the Older Americans Act. For over 50 years, our purpose has been to understand the needs of older Kansans, advocate for individuals and their families, and to empower aging adults and persons with disabilities throughout Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Jackson, Nemaha, Marshall, and Washington Counties. We provide services tailored to local and regional needs including case management, in-home care, nutritional support, transportation, information and assistance, health promotion programs, Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK), caregiver assistance, and access to community resources and support. We also serve as your local Aging and Disability Resource Center with focus on long term planning for individuals of all ages, abilities, and income levels. As the Benefits Enrollment Center for Northeastern Kansas, funded through the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA), we also help low-income people with Medicare access programs that pay for healthcare, food, and more through programs like Medicare Part D Extra Help/Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), Medicare Savings Programs, Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). We are currently in the process of expanding programs and services with the construction of a multi-use aging services and transit hub in Hiawatha. This innovative facility will offer all of our regular services with the addition of a community café, technology lab, activities room, and full-service transportation center.
